Welcome back to my blog, dear readers! Today, I’m sharing a bit of a mishap that led me to discover an essential piece of safety gear. If you’ve been following my adventures, you might remember the unfortunate incident where I got plaster in my eye. Ouch! That experience was a real eye-opener (pun intended) about the importance of proper eye protection during DIY projects.

Initially, I tried to remedy the situation by ordering a pair of safety goggles from Amazon. But, alas, that attempt was a flop – the goggles I received were far from satisfactory. Determined not to repeat my mistake, I went on a hunt for the best safety goggles out there, leading me to the DEWALT CONCEALER PREMIUM SAFETY GOGGLES (Model 69051).

Why I Chose DEWALT Concealer Safety Goggles

These aren’t your average safety goggles. The DEWALT Concealer is a dual mold goggle that combines comfort with high-level protection. Let’s dive into the features that make these goggles a standout choice:

Polycarbonate, Wraparound Lens: Offers a 180° field of vision and ensures that your eyes are protected from all angles.

Ventilation Ports and Built-In Ventilation Channel: These features provide breathability, reducing the chances of fogging up.

Anti-Mist and DEWALT XtraClear™ Anti-Fog Lens Coating: Keep your vision clear in different working conditions.

Adjustable Straps: For a fit that’s snug yet comfortable, perfect for long hours of work.

Anti-Scratch Lens and DEWALT ToughCoat™ Hard Coated Lens: Your goggles stay clear and scratch-free.

Grade B Frame Impact Protection: Offers robust protection against debris and accidental impacts.

Optical Class 1 and 99.9% UV Protection: Ensures visual clarity and protects from harmful UV rays.

TPE Frame for Day-Long Comfort: This feature makes it comfortable to wear them for extended periods.

Can Be Worn Over Glasses: A boon for those of us who wear prescription glasses.

Dual-Injected Rubber Seal: Provides a secure fit and keeps out dust and debris.

My Experience with the DEWALT Concealer Goggles

I’ve used these goggles for various projects, and I must say, they’re fantastic. The shading of the lens makes my workroom look bright, enhancing visibility. The foam around the goggles creates a snug fit, ensuring no dust sneaks in. However, I did notice that they tend to steam up when I use them with an FP3 mask, but it’s a minor inconvenience compared to the overall protection they offer.

Specifications at a Glance

Adjustability: Adjustable Straps

Anti-Scratch: Yes

Brand: DeWalt

Standards: EN 166 3.4B

Size: One Size, Unisex

Material: Polycarbonate with TPE Frame

Impact Protection: Grade B Frame

Lens Type: Clear

Warranty: 1 Year

Model: Concealer

Pack Size: 1

Color: Yellow

UV Protection: 99.9%

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for reliable, comfortable, and durable safety goggles, the DEWALT Concealer should be at the top of your list. They’ve become a staple in my toolkit, offering peace of mind while I tackle my DIY projects. Remember, safety first!

Introduction

Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts! If you’ve been following my blog, you might recall the unfortunate incident I had with plaster getting in my eye. That painful experience was a wake-up call, emphasizing the importance of good quality safety goggles for even the most basic jobs.

The Search Begins

As someone who frequently wears a mask, fogging goggles has been a persistent issue for me. So, I turned to Amazon in search of a solution and stumbled upon the BDS Safety Goggles/Glasses, certified under EU EN166:2001 and ANSI Z87.1. They boasted features like impact resistance, anti-scratch, anti-fog, anti-UV, and a universal size.

Initial Impressions

My first few uses were impressive. The goggles didn’t fog up, even when I was working with a drywall sander—an extremely messy task. Even when connected to my Karcher vacuum cleaner, which usually does a great job at dust reduction, these goggles stayed clear.

The Revelation

However, not all that glitters is gold. As I wiped the exterior of the goggles to remove dust, I discovered the reason behind their anti-fog success: three large vents at the top, designed to prevent condensation. These vents, while effective in reducing fog, had no filters, allowing dust to accumulate inside.

The Drawbacks

This design flaw became evident when I was doing overhead work. Dust and debris easily entered through these vents, compromising my safety. The same issue arose when I used them for spray painting ceilings; the paint particles found their way inside the goggles.

Switching Gears

Consequently, I switched to DeWalt goggles. While they excel in keeping dust and paint out, I’m back to square one with the fogging issue.

Conclusion

In the world of DIY and home improvement, safety should always be a priority. My quest for the perfect pair of safety goggles continues, as each brand seems to have its pros and cons. I’d love to hear from you – what safety goggles do you use, and how do they hold up in different conditions?

Introduction

Working on DIY projects can often be fulfilling, but they’re not without risks, as I learned the hard way. One late evening, while finishing a wall, I had an unexpected and painful encounter with gypsum multi-finish plaster by getting plaster in my eye.

The Incident – Plaster in the Eye

As I was working, some plaster splattered onto my face and, more critically, into my eye. Initially, I tried to wash it out, underestimating the severity of the situation. Plaster, especially when mixed with water, can spread and stick, making it difficult to remove completely. This was a mistake I would soon regret.

With the eye hospital closed for the night, I turned to a plasterers’ forum for advice. Many suggested washing it out, which I had already attempted. By the next morning, my eye was swollen and painful, prompting a visit to the emergency eye department.

Medical Emergency

At the hospital, the doctors took a pH reading of both my eyes to assess the damage. Plaster in the eye is dangerous because it can cause chemical burns and potentially lead to severe damage or loss of vision. The treatment involved flushing my eye with an alkaline solution over several hours, interspersed with pH readings to monitor progress.

Aftermath and Recovery

After the extensive wash, the doctor found that the plaster had scratched my cornea. I was prescribed four different eye drops to manage the injury and prevent infection. Despite this, I developed conjunctivitis, which thankfully subsided after a few days. It took three more hospital visits before I was finally out of danger.

Key Advice

My experience taught me two crucial lessons. First, always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling materials like gypsum plaster. Second, in the event of an accident, don’t delay seeking professional medical help. Plaster can cause severe chemical burns to the eye, risking permanent damage or loss of sight. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, go straight to the hospital without hesitation. Your vision is too precious to risk.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, secure lock for your home or office, the Yale P-M550-CH-65 5 Lever Sashlock is an excellent choice. This lock is designed to provide superior protection against forced entry and is made from high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting durability.

One of the key features of the Yale P-M550-CH-65 5 Lever Sashlock is its five-lever mechanism, which makes it much more difficult for intruders to pick or manipulate the lock. This mechanism is designed to be extremely difficult to bypass, which means that your property will be much more secure with this lock in place.

In addition to its high-quality construction, the lock is also incredibly easy to install. The lock comes with everything you need to install it quickly and easily, including detailed instructions and all the necessary mounting hardware. I found I had to widen the cut out with a multitool to allow this new lock to fit, as it was slightly wider than the replacement. Also the faceplate was thicker which meant I had to deepen the cut outs on the door to enable it to close.

Another great feature of the Yale P-M550-CH-65 5 Lever Sashlock is its stylish chrome finish. This finish not only looks great, but it also provides an added layer of protection against rust and corrosion. This means that your lock will continue to function properly for years to come, even in harsh weather conditions.

Finally, the lock is also backed by a comprehensive warranty from Yale, which means that you can trust in its quality and performance. With this lock in place, you can rest easy knowing that your property is well-protected against intruders and other unwanted visitors. But don’t be too complacent and look at our crime prevention pages for more information. Your door could come under a brute force attacks if there is only a lock in the middle of the door, which is why I was replacing it in the first place.

In conclusion, if you’re in the market for a high-quality, reliable lock for your home or office, the Yale P-M550-CH-65 5 Lever Sashlock is an excellent choice. With its advanced security features, durable construction, easy installation, and stylish chrome finish, this lock is sure to provide you with years of reliable protection and peace of mind.

When it comes to installing doors and windows, it’s essential to use the right type of fixings to ensure they are secure and stable. One popular option for fixing frames is frame fixings, which consist of a screw and a raw plug. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what frame fixings are and how they can be used for door and window frames.

What are frame fixings?

Frame fixings are a type of fixing that consists of a screw and a raw plug. They are commonly used for fixing door and window frames to walls, floors, and other surfaces. The screw is inserted into the raw plug, which is then inserted into a pre-drilled hole in the wall or other surface. Once in place, the screw is tightened, and the raw plug expands to grip the surrounding material, providing a secure fixing for the frame.

Types of frame fixings

There are several types of frame fixings available, including:

Nylon frame fixings: These fixings are made from nylon and are ideal for use in softer materials, such as plasterboard or insulation board. They are easy to install and provide a strong and secure fixing.

Metal frame fixings: Metal frame fixings are made from steel or other metals and are suitable for use in more robust materials, such as brick or concrete. They are highly durable and can withstand high loads and pressures.

Self-tapping frame fixings: Self-tapping frame fixings are designed to create their own thread as they are screwed into the material, eliminating the need for pre-drilling. They are quick and easy to install and provide a secure fixing.

How to use frame fixings for door and window frames

When installing door and window frames, it’s important to use the right type of frame fixings and to follow the correct installation process. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Choose the right type of frame fixing for the material you are fixing the frame to.

Measure and mark the position of the frame fixing holes on the frame and the wall or other surface.

Use a suitable drill bit to create a hole in the wall or other surface. The size of the hole should be slightly smaller than the raw plug.

Insert the raw plug into the hole in the wall or other surface.

Insert the screw into the raw plug, leaving a small amount of space between the screw head and the surface of the frame.

Place the frame in position and align the fixing holes with the screws.

Tighten the screws using a screwdriver or drill, being careful not to over-tighten them.

Conclusion

Frame fixings consisting of screw and raw plug are a popular and effective way to fix door and window frames to walls, floors, and other surfaces. With the right type of frame fixing and the correct installation process, you can ensure that your frames are secure and stable, providing a long-lasting and reliable solution for your home or business. They can be found at hardware stores like Wickes and Screwfix.

Locks are a fundamental part of our daily lives, providing security and peace of mind in a variety of settings. They come in many shapes and sizes, but not all locks are created equal when it comes to security. One type of lock that is particularly secure is the 5 lever lock, which is widely used in the United Kingdom.

A 5 lever lock is a type of mortice lock that uses five levers to secure the bolt in place. The lock is housed within a mortice, or rectangular hole, in the edge of a door, and the key operates a series of levers that lift and rotate the bolt. The bolt is made of hardened steel, and the levers are constructed from brass or steel. This construction makes it difficult for an intruder to manipulate the lock, as they would need to bypass all five levers simultaneously.

There are several reasons why a 5 lever lock is more secure than other types of lock. Firstly, the use of multiple levers makes it harder for an intruder to pick the lock. The more levers a lock has, the more complex the mechanism is, and the harder it is to manipulate. Additionally, 5 lever locks are more resistant to drilling and other forms of physical attack. The hardened steel bolt and the construction of the levers make it difficult to drill through the lock or break it with a crowbar or other tool.

Another reason why 5 lever locks are more secure is that they are often British Standard (BS) approved. This means that they have been rigorously tested and certified to meet certain security standards set by the British Standards Institution (BSI). BS 3621 is the standard that applies to mortice locks, and it specifies the minimum requirements for performance and durability. To meet this standard, a lock must be able to withstand a variety of tests, including drilling, picking, and physical attack.

Finally, 5 lever locks are more secure because they offer a higher level of key control. This means that it is more difficult for someone to duplicate the key or make a copy without authorization. Keys for 5 lever locks are often unique, with complex patterns or shapes that cannot be easily replicated. Additionally, keys for these locks are often protected by patents or other legal means, making it harder for someone to obtain a key without authorization.

In conclusion, 5 lever locks are a highly secure type of lock that offer a range of features to protect against intruders. Their use of multiple levers, hardened steel bolts, and construction materials make them resistant to drilling, picking, and physical attack. Additionally, their British Standard approval and high level of key control make them a popular choice for homeowners and businesses looking for reliable and secure locks.

An external wooden door frames is a popular choice for many homeowners due to their aesthetic appeal and natural warmth. However, like any other material, a wooden door frame comes with its fair share of issues that can compromise their durability, structural integrity, and aesthetics over time. In this blog post, we will explore some of the common issues associated with an external wooden door frame.

Moisture damage: One of the biggest issues with external wooden door frames is their susceptibility to moisture damage. Moisture can cause wood to expand and contract, leading to warping, cracking, and decay. This is particularly true for door frames that are exposed to rain, snow, and other weather elements. If left untreated, moisture damage can compromise the strength and stability of the frame, leading to structural issues and even safety hazards.

Insect infestation: Wooden door frames can also be vulnerable to insect infestation, particularly termites and wood-boring beetles. These pests can cause significant damage to the wood, leading to weakened structures and even collapse. It is important to inspect door frames regularly for signs of insect damage and take prompt action to prevent further infestation.

Paint and finish failure: Over time, the paint or finish on wooden door frames can wear off or crack, leaving the wood exposed to the elements. This can lead to further moisture damage, as well as discoloration and unsightly stains on the wood. To prevent this, it is important to regularly maintain and refinish the door frames.

Thermal expansion and contraction: Wooden door frames can also be affected by thermal expansion and contraction, particularly in areas with extreme temperature changes. This can cause warping and cracking of the wood, leading to gaps between the door frame and the wall. This not only compromises the aesthetic appeal of the frame but can also compromise the security of the door.

Age-related wear and tear: Like any other material, wooden door frames can also be subject to age-related wear and tear. This can include cracking, splitting, and general deterioration of the wood, particularly in older frames. If left unchecked, this can compromise the structural integrity of the door frame and pose safety hazards.

In conclusion, external wooden door frames are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their aesthetic appeal and natural warmth. However, they come with their fair share of issues that can compromise their durability, structural integrity, and aesthetics over time. To prevent these issues, it is important to regularly maintain and inspect door frames for signs of damage, and take prompt action to prevent further deterioration. With proper care, wooden door frames can last for many years, providing a beautiful and functional entrance to your home.

Bosch is a well-known brand in the world of power tools, and their Professional 3x Jigsaw Blade T 1013 AWP Precision for Soft Material is a popular choice among DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike. The blade is designed for precision cuts in soft materials like wood, laminates, and plastics. However, when it comes to using the blade on insulation boards, particularly 150mm and 90mm PIR insulation boards, it may not be the best option.

As someone who has used the Bosch Professional 3x Jigsaw Blade T 1013 AWP Precision for Soft Material on insulation boards, I have found that the blade can flex and not provide as straight a cut as one can perform with a hand saw. This can lead to uneven cuts, which can be frustrating and time-consuming to fix.

The concept behind the Bosch Professional 3x Jigsaw Blade T 1013 AWP Precision for Soft Material is good. The blade is designed to provide precision cuts and reduce splintering, which is particularly important when working with soft materials. The blade features precision-ground teeth with taper-ground body for precise cuts, as well as a pointed ground tooth design for clean cuts and reduced splintering.

However, when it comes to using the blade on insulation boards, particularly thicker boards like 150mm and 90mm PIR insulation boards, the blade may not be the best option. These boards can be more difficult to cut through, and the blade may flex or wander during the cut, leading to less precise cuts.

If you are working with insulation boards, particularly thicker boards like 150mm and 90mm PIR insulation boards, you may want to consider using a hand saw or a specialized blade designed for insulation board cutting. These blades are typically thicker and more rigid, which can help prevent flexing during the cut and lead to more precise cuts.

In conclusion, while the Bosch Professional 3x Jigsaw Blade T 1013 AWP Precision for Soft Material is a good option for precision cuts in soft materials like wood, laminates, and plastics, it may not be the best option for insulation boards, particularly thicker boards like 150mm and 90mm PIR insulation boards. When working with insulation boards, it may be worth investing in a specialized blade designed for insulation board cutting or using a hand saw for more precise cuts.
