FG35 Primer by RESITRIX® Product Review

FG35 Primer Review

Purpose of FG35 Primer

FG35 Primer is used for priming substrate surfaces for ALUTRIX® 600 or ALUTRIX® FR self-adhesive aluminum vapour-barrier membranes on bituminous materials, timber materials and solid materials
I required FG35 Primer to prime the wooden roof deck before fitting Alutrix 600.

Application method

The product datasheet indicates the method of installation as:
“Apply FG 35 thinly and evenly on one side and, depending on the application area, either across the entire surface or in places using a sheepskin roller, a brush, a spray diffuser or a spray can”
My intention was to spray the Alutrix with an electric sprsyer to get a light even application. As a backup I bought a sheepskin roller for application so i thought I was prepared! The instructions on the tin do not state that it is suitable for spraying. The only methods of application proposed are brush or roller. I am wondering if the spray application is a different product, so comment below on your thoughts on this.

Application attempts

Having therefore eliminated the sprayer I was onto rolling and thought a 28 square metre roof would take a maximum of half an hour. I poured the FG35 into a paint tray then got the roller out and started rolling. I used a Sheepskin Roller by ProDec 9″ x 1.75″ . However the roller kept getting stuck leaving behind sheepskin on the wood. As it was a warmish day of about 18 degrees at midday I put the lid onto the FG35 whilst I was working away.
I went to get a brush out of the shed to finish the application. Then I tried to reopen the lid on the tin. All I can say is never replace the lid if you wish to use the contents inside! After drilling the lid off and levering with a screw driver then removing all the metal splinters I was ready to go again. The brush quickly got destroyed by trying to lightly paint on the solution. I had been told that a 5 litre tin would cover 15 – 20 square metres but it was quickly clear that I was not going to use anywhere near as much. In the end I used 5 litres for 28 square metres.

Drying times

Drying should have been 30 minutes. 1 hour later it was still tacky. The job got delayed whilst waiting for it to dry. Even the next day it was sticky in places and I had to change into rubber soled shoes so as not to stick.

Personal protection equipment

Whilst applying use a facemask, gloves and full body coverage.

Observations

I noticed that on wood that did not have a covering of primer the Alutrix did not stick as well, so this product works if you ignore the application instructions.
I purchased my FG35 from rubber roofs
